Croatia's Premier Island Through the Eyes of Hvar Touristik in Stari Grad

There is no denying the beauty of Hvar, but perhaps it is best viewed through the eyes of a local. Leading island tourist agency, Hvar Touristik, based in Stari Grad, have an impressive database of photos and know the island intimately.

Boats are an important part of island life, and tourists are transported to and around Hvar in the season. Winter is the time for repair and maintenance, as above in Stari Grad.

Hvar is known as the Lavender Island and June and July bring a colourful and aromatic flavour to the island, culminating in the lavender harvest, which is celebrated at a festival in Velo Grablje. Jadrolinija's trusty ferries keep the connection to the mainland.

The jewel in the crown of the island's offer is Hvar Town and the Pakleni Island's, a celebrity haunt and proud hosts to a fully-clothed British Prince and proud American popstar Mum-to-be in 2011.

While the evening action may be on the dance floors of Veneranda, Pink Champagne and Carpe Diem Beach Club, the day belongs to the Adriatic Sea, simply some of the cleanest and most attractive swimming in the world.

There are plenty of other resorts on Hvar worthy of a visit, including Vrboska, home to the main marina, and also known as Little Venice.

For the more adventurous, head to Pitve and the southern resorts of Zavala, Ivan Dolac and Sveta Nedjelja through the infamous Pitve Tunnel, one of the hairiest rides there is, and Europe's last undiscovered film set.

A free hotel room if it snows, says the brochure. It DOES snow, rarely, but the normal view of snow for local kids is on the Biokovo mountains on the mainland through palm trees.

Although the sunniest island in the Adriatic, it does rain occasionally (don't tell the tourists) and clouds are a welcome sight after a hot summer, as here over the inland village of Dol, famous for its unique edible dormouse festival.

Hvar Touristik are local, connected and efficient - offering a wide selection of accommodation and tours on the island. For more information, visit their website.
