Away from the Beach: Atelier Marinka in Dol

For a change of pace and a tranquil afternoon in one of the most peaceful settings on the island, head out to the unfashionable village of Dol and seek out Atelier Marinka, a delightful stone complex of individual buildings at the edge of the village, with variety of artistic offerings.

The atelier is run by a Slovenian artist called Marinka, and features her work and that of her late husband in the main building, while there is a wealth of discovery throughout the remaining outbuildings and gardens of the property.

Saturday mornings are given over to local children and art classes, with pupils from aged two and beyond encouraged to express themselves through art, be it paining, drawing or mosaics.

The tranquil setting and relaxed environment makes it an appealing place for visiting artists, who are encouraged to share their creative skills. Given the expansive nature of the complex, with its various quaint nooks and crannies, there is room for all.

Art aside, the atelier is a wonderful setting, with its colourful wild garden, hill views and authentic Dalmatian stone feel.

To reach the atelier, park at the cafe in Dol, then follow the road to the right behind the cafe, until it forks (there is a sign 'Atelier' to the right). Turn right and walk to the end and the atelier is the last building on the left.

A magical experience.

With thanks to Marion Podolski and Chris Connor for the photos.
