Preparing for the Tourist Season near the Franciscan Monastery in Hvar Town

Preparing for a tourist season requires activity on all fronts: boats are repainted, apartments cleaned and stalls assembled. Away from the main action, however, there are also small hives of activity, such as events near the Franciscan monastery in Hvar Town, one of the oldest (and most picturesque) buildings in Hvar.

A local artist paints the letterwork of a bronze bust close to the monastery, delicately multitasking by conducting an animated discussion on his mobile phone pressed to his left ear.

The creator of the bust and other works in and around the monastery is the enigmatic Franciscan monk, Father Joachim, whose talents reach far beyond the religious. Pictured here in his trademark beret, Fr. Joachim is coordinating the transport of a large piece of Brac stone into the monastery cloister, for yet another piece. The pulley system is primitive, but highly effective.

The monastery, currently undergoing renovation, is one of the prettiest buildings in the town, and full of history. It can be reached by walking along the waterfront past Carpe Diem. With thanks for the photos to local tourist agency, Secret Hvar.
