New for 2011 on Hvar: The Jelsa Express and Easter Hunt

The tourist season in Jelsa finally started in earnest with the traditional Easter celebrations. In addition to the infamous 500 year-old Za Krizen religious procession, younger members of the local community were intrigued to see a new feature on the riva, the Jelsa Express.

With departures every two hours, it is a fun way to see a little more of this charming island. One of the first functions of the train was to transport the children from the kindergartens of Jelsa, Svirce and Vrboska to an Easter Egg hunt, hosted by the Hotel Fontana in Jelsa.

While the event was meant for local kindergarten children only, exceptions were made for visiting cousins from Zagreb, who seemed initially less than impressed by a train when the temptations of an inviting Adriatic Sea were just metres away.

A full train meandered its way to Hotel Fontana, descending to its destination in pine forests and breathtaking view.

A furious search for hidden maps in search of the next clue followed, as the very walls of the hotel were analysed in search of Easter goodies. Finally, after five maps were enthusiastically sought and found, the Holy Grail of chocolate bunnies was located.

The hotel kindly put on an entertainment show for the kids after the hunt, with dancing from the director down, followed by a free lunch. A nice gesture, and very much appreciated by the many families who took part.
