Animal Life on Hvar: No Food at the Restaurant
Animals are scarce on Hvar, and visitors are often surprised at the lack of animals wandering around. Wild boar are still hunted on the island, and it pays to be vigilant at night on the Jelsa to Sucuraj road to avoid a head-on collision with these meaty beasts.
Apart from the occasional horse, a multitude of goats and an odd sheep or two, the most populous animal on Hvar seems to to be the donkey. Brusje is known as the village with the most donkeys on the island (of the two- and four-legged variety, according to local jokes), but they can be found all over the island, in some unusual places, such as these two above who have turned up outside opening hours in the excellent Dvor Dubokovic restaurant in Pitve.
